Guidelines On How To Write An Essay Properly

By following some basic guidelines, even an inexperienced writer can write a polished essay properly. These five tips will guide you through the process.

  1. Have a clear, strong thesis statement.
  2. The thesis statement is the main idea of the essay. It’s used both to convey the point of the essay and to lend the essay focus and structure. Thesis statements can take different forms depending upon the type of essay assigned, but they always have several things in common:

    • Brevity
    • A thesis statement should be relatively concise—no more than one or two sentences.

    • Specificity
    • A thesis statement should express the specific topic of the essay, whether it is the author’s opinions, the subjects being addressed, a question being answered, etc.

    • Clarity
    • The reader should know immediately upon reading the thesis statement what to expect from the remainder of the essay.

  3. Organized structure.
  4. There are three basic elements to the structure of an essay: the introduction, the body of the essay, and the conclusion of the essay. These elements will vary in length depending upon the length of the essay assigned; the simplest essays will have a single paragraph introduction, a one to three paragraph body section, and a single paragraph conclusion. If the essay is intended to be longer than a page or two, each element may be composed of multiple paragraphs, but the basic concept remains the same. In any case, each paragraph should have its own theme, which should be expressed in its leading sentence. Writers should also ensure there is a smooth transition between paragraphs and that the order of the ideas and concepts presented make sense to readers.

  5. Editing and proofreading.
  6. Few things make as poor an impression on the reader as poor editing and proofreading, whether the audience is colleagues, recreational readers, or instructors. Editing and proofreading are two different things:

    • Editing is done for aesthetic reasons and to improve the flow of ideas in the paper. For example, sentences which are grammatically correct but awkward or unclear should be addressed during the editing process.
    • Proofreading is done to ensure grammatical accuracy and correct spelling.

It is helpful, when conducting editing and proofreading to have a third party read over the essay to lend a fresh perspective and a fresh eye, as it can be difficult for authors to identify their own mistakes.
